Let me tell you a little secret: There’s something oddly satisfying about tearing down Amazon boxes.

You know the ones—those massive piles that seem to accumulate after every online shopping spree?

Well, my wife, Erica, and I have this little routine: she throws the Amazon boxes into the garage, and I take care of the rest.

Every week, I batch them into perfectly flattened, neatly stacked piles that go straight into recycling.

Sounds a little strange, right?

But here’s the thing—it’s not just about tearing down boxes. There’s a deeper lesson here, and it’s about batch processing and how it can change your entire approach to productivity.

I came across a study where they had participants write down the alphabet (A-Z) and numbers (1-24) in two different ways. First, they wrote out A-Z and 1-24. The second round, they wrote A1, B2, C3, etc., switching back and forth between letters and numbers.

Here’s the shocking part: the time it took to complete the second task—task switching—was seven times longer than the first.

And that’s not because the work was harder.

It’s because switching between tasks wastes precious time and energy.

BATCHING: THE KEY TO MORE MARGIN  

This is where batch processing comes in.

Instead of constantly switching between tasks—whether it's emails, meetings, or even those annoying Amazon boxes—try batching them.

For me, that means taking 10 minutes once a week to handle the mountain of boxes in the garage, instead of doing it every day.

The key? Doing it all at once.

By grouping similar tasks together, you avoid the costs of starting and stopping each time.

Think about it: I don’t need to pull out the box cutter multiple times a week. I do it once, in a batch, and I’m done.

The same goes for other tasks: content creation, meal prep, or even handling your media for the month.

When you batch your tasks, you reduce the inefficiencies of task switching and reclaim valuable time.
