Potty Training Your Business

Potty Training Your Business 🚽

TBH… one of the hardest parts of being a parent is the letting go.

I was holding my daughter, Lily, the other night. She’s eight months old now, and I’ve been in awe of how quickly time is flying.

She’s the easiest of my three kids. She sleeps well, she’s generally positive, and she’s just… easy.

Honestly, I’m so grateful for it, especially considering the chaos that comes with raising little humans.

But there’s one thing that’s started to emerge that wasn’t there with my boys:

High attachment.

When she sees me or my wife leave the room, she screams like someone’s broken her arm.

And the thing is—she’s absolutely fine. She’s safe. She’s not in need. But she doesn’t know that yet.

It got me thinking… Are there parts of your business that scream at you like they need you, but they don’t actually need you?

The “squeaky wheels”?

The things that are attached to you, not because they’re worse, but because they’ve grown accustomed to having you constantly around? 😬

💔 The Pain of Letting Go (and Why It’s Necessary)

When I first became a parent, I wanted to be involved in everything. I thought I had to be there for every moment… every meal, every tantrum, every playtime.

But as it turns out, that’s not how they thrive.

And it’s not how your business will thrive either.

You can’t always be the one wiping up the messes. You have to give your kids the space to figure it out. For Lily, that means teaching her how to be secure without me hovering over her every second.

And in business? That means letting go and creating systems that can operate without you.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but here’s the thing: you can’t grow until you let go.

This is where the parallels between parenting and business get real. Your business needs to be trained to function independently, just like you train your kids to sleep on their own or tie their shoes.

The first time I had to let go of control—when Lily started crying for me as I left the room—was like that moment you realize your business doesn’t need you to fix everything, but it needs you to give it the space to grow.

🛞 The Squeaky Wheels in Your Business

In business, there are things that scream for your attention, but they don’t actually need you. They need your systems.

Just like Lily’s high attachment to me, sometimes it’s our businesses that act like the needy toddler.

It feels like the minute you step away, everything will fall apart, but the truth is... it won’t.

It just feels like it will.

Now, I know this is hard. I’m guilty of it myself.

The attachment to wanting to be needed, to being the one that everything hinges on.

But as I’ve learned with Lily, this attachment is actually limiting.

It’s a disservice to both of us.

In your business, it’s the same thing.

There are things that cry for you, but it’s not because the world will end—it’s because it’s used to your presence.

🚽 Training Your Business to Survive Without You

Here’s the big truth: if your business is dependent on you for every little thing, it will never run smoothly when you're not there.

So what do we do? We build systems.

I remember the sleepless nights with my other kids, trying to sleep-train them.

That “cry it out” method wasn’t fun, but it built resilience in them—and in me.

Step 1: Set boundaries. Start by removing yourself from the constant noise, just like when you step back during a sleep training session. Let your business experience the discomfort of functioning without you. It builds resilience.

Step 2: Empower your team. I had to teach my kids to stand on their own, even when they didn’t want to. In your business, it’s the same. Let your team handle things. Let them mess up and learn. This is how they grow.

Step 3: Trust your systems. Systems are the “training wheels” that ensure your business is running smoothly without you. Automations, clear workflows, and processes—they’re the magic sauce to making it all work without your constant presence.

The Key?

Letting go is the hardest part.

But it’s also the most rewarding.

Once you take a step back, you’ll see your team step up.

Your business will thrive… not because you’re doing everything, but because you’ve built the space for others to thrive.

Trust me, when your business functions without you, you’ll realize you’re not abandoning it.

You’re giving it the room to grow.

And when you look at your business a year from now, you’ll be so glad you did.

Ready to let go

It’s time to potty-train your business. Trust me, it’s the best decision you’ll ever make.
