Why you should put down your phone and pick up a coconut
š„„ Why you should put down your phone and pick up a coconut
How you spend your days is how you spend your life.
Meaning if your days are consistently packed with work and not the things/people you loveā¦
Thatās your life.
I've had this neon sign in my office for ages: "Profit More, Work Less."
It sounds like a distant dream sometimes, right?
This is a movement that's reshaping how we think about work-life balance.
Spoiler: Itās revolutionizing our approach to work ā and youāre part of this change, whether you know it or not.
Today in 4 minutes or less:
āļø Coconuts > micromanaging
āļø Cut down digital clutter
COCONUTS > MICROMANAGING
Let me share a little story from just last month.
It was my 10-year anniversary. š
Instead of being tethered to my laptop or phone, checking notifications, I was completely in the moment.
There was actually MORE business than usual, but I didnāt open Slack once.
While my team was running live chat for a clientās 58,542 new usersā¦
There we were, my wife and I, celebrating on the beach in Hawaii. š¹
We sipped coconut water (or is it coconut milk? The boys and I had a lively debate about that) under the sun, soaking in the good vibes and laughter.
This wasn't something I could have imagined a few years backā¦
Normally, an important day like this would have been partially shadowed by work obligations.
But this year was different.
My business was managing thousands of new sign-ups, and I was fully hands-offāall thanks to the awesome team and systems we've put in place. š
It was a realization moment for me, a glimpse of what true freedom felt like:
Being fully present with my family, with work being the last thing on my mind.
That evening, as I watched the sunset with my familyā¦
It struck me just how vital it is to have a business that doesn't rely on my constant presence.
10 years!!!
This is the freedom I've been working towards, achieved through building a dependable team and systems that never sleep, even if I decide to take a day off.
Buying back your time isnāt just a dream. It's achievable with the right strategies. Hereās how you can start:
Team: Go back and read my past few newsletters for more on this. Even if itās just one VA, your team is your biggest asset. Train them well, trust them fully, and then let them take the reins when needed.
Systems: Systems work 24/7; humans donāt need to. Set up systems that keep your business running smoothly whether youāre actively involved or not. This is the beauty of SaaS (and white-label support). Technology can handle a lot more than you might think.
Delegate: Delegation is an art. Start small, delegate tasks you're comfortable releasing control over, and gradually increase as you build trust with your team. Remember, every task you delegate is more time you reclaim.
Prioritize: Not all tasks are created equal. Identify tasks that significantly impact your business and focus on those. For everything else, see if it can be automated, delegated, or dropped.
Boundaries: This is crucial. Decide when youāre working and when youāre not. Communicate these boundaries to your team, your clients, and most importantly, to yourself. Stick to them, and respect your own time as much as you want others to respect it.
By mastering these strategies, you don't just work smarterā¦
You also create a life that values time as your most precious resource. āļø
This approach has allowed me to enjoy significant moments fullyālike my anniversaryāwithout the nagging feeling of neglecting my duties.
It's about making sure that when you work, you're highly effective, and when you're off, you're truly off, enjoying the life you're working so hard to build.
CUT DOWN DIGITAL CLUTTER
It's a noisy world out there.
Notifications buzzing, emails dinging, social media endlessly updatingā¦
It's the constant backdrop of our lives, kind of like a crowded room where everyone is talking at once.
You want to listen, but where do you even start?
I used to LIVE in that noise. My phone was blowing up, my email was overflowing, and I couldn't catch a break. The stress was real.
I knew something had to change when my Apple Watch started sending me alerts about my rising heart rate. šØ š°
My watch was literally telling me, "Hey, you need to chill!"
So, what did I do?
I started by turning off all unnecessary notifications. It was like stepping out of that noisy room into a quiet space where I could finally think.
Let's break down some strategies that can help you reclaim your mental space:
Selective Notification: Turn off non-essential alerts. If it's not about your immediate health or safety, does it need to interrupt your day? Probably not.
Scheduled Email Checks: Instead of being a slave to your inbox, check emails at set times. You might even set up an auto-reply that says, "Hey, thanks for your message! I check emails from 8-9 AM PST every weekday." This setup manages others' expectations and cools down any urgency for instant replies. This helps you manage your day instead of letting your inbox manage you.
Mindful Media Consumption: Youāve heard it again and again, but itās real! Be intentional about your social media and news consumption. Choose quality over quantity. It's about being informed, not overwhelmed. I recommend Opal if you really want to manage screentime.
Why go through all this trouble?
Because your mental space is where all your strategic thinking, planning, and ultimately, your business growth happens.
If it's cluttered with noise, you're just spinning your wheels.
By taking control of what you let into your mental space, you're setting yourself up not just for more productive work, but for a happier, less stressed life.
Itās about making sure that the technology thatās supposed to help us doesnāt end up owning us.
As we close another chapter of Margin Makers, remember this: You have the power to transform your work into more than just a daily grind.
Celebrating your wins, big or small, and learning from each step are crucial parts of the journey towards "profit more, work less."
