Stop Being Great in Silence

Stop Being Great in Silence

Be Quiet Pedro Pascal GIF by HBO

Being good at what you do is awesome.

You care about your craft.

You do the work when no one’s watching.

You hold yourself to a higher standard than most people ever will.

But being good at letting people know you’re good?

That’s where the magic actually happens. This took me a long time to learn.

When I started freelancing back in 2012, I believed in one simple idea: Do great work and referrals will take care of the rest.

Marketing felt like something other people did.

Louder people. Flashier people.

So I stayed in my comfort zone.
Heads down. Delivering. Waiting.

And for about four years, that worked… kind of.

That’s when I started to understand something important.

Being good is admirable.

But being known for being good is how you actually serve others.

🪜 The First Step Out of the Comfort Zone

In 2015, I did something that felt oddly uncomfortable at the time.
I paid for leads on Thumbtack.

It wasn’t glamorous. I wasn't confident.

But it was the first time I intentionally put myself out there instead of hoping to be discovered.

That small move didn’t change everything overnight, but it cracked the door open.

It showed me that visibility wasn’t selling out. It was participation.

🥸 Borrowing Confidence Before Owning It

By 2017, I was running Facebook ads. But mostly for clients.

I could confidently tell them why ads worked.

I could explain funnels, targeting, and budgets all day long.

But when it came to running ads for myself? I hesitated.

There’s something vulnerable about marketing your own business.

You’re not just promoting a service, you're attaching your name to it.

So I kept helping others step into the spotlight while I stayed just offstage.

🤯 The Shift That Changed Everything

It wasn’t until 2020 that it finally clicked.

My business deserved the same attention I was giving my clients.

My work deserved to be seen, not just quietly delivered.

And more importantly, the people who needed my help couldn’t hire me if they didn’t know I existed.

That’s the heart of it:

Being good is admirable.Being known for being good is how you actually serve others.

Visibility isn’t ego. It’s access.

📣 Why Marketing Is Part of the Service

A lot of talented people hide behind humility. They think staying quiet is noble.

But if your work solves real problems, staying invisible doesn’t help anyone.

Marketing isn’t about hype. It’s about clarity.

It’s letting the right people find you. It’s making it easier for someone to say, “That’s exactly who I need.”

When you share your story, you’re not bragging.

You’re creating permission.

How to Be Good and Known

Here’s what I’d tell my 2012 self and maybe you too:

1. Start small, but start publicly
One post. One email. One offer. Consistency beats confidence.

2. Talk about the work, not yourself
Focus on problems you solve and outcomes you create. The credibility follows.

3. Borrow belief until you build your own
Run the ad. Share the post. Hit publish before you feel “ready.”

4. Remember who you’re actually helping
Marketing isn’t for you, it’s for the person who needs what you already know how to do.

5. Be a little louder than feels comfortable
That edge of discomfort? That’s usually the growth line.

🔥 Your Move Today

You don’t need a rebrand, a funnel, or a massive marketing plan to start being seen.

You just need one small, intentional step.

  • Share one thing you know helps people.

  • Tell one short story about a problem you’ve solved.

  • Let yourself be seen, even imperfectly.

Because doing great work in silence limits your impact.

And the world doesn’t need fewer capable people, it needs more of them visible.

Start small. Be a little louder than feels comfortable.

And let your work reach the people it was meant for.
