The Confidence Haircut

Does anyone else ever feel like you need to apologize for prioritizing yourself?
Yeah… me too.
For a long time, I thought doing something just for me was selfish.
If it didn’t make money, help my family, or push a project forward, I’d quietly label it as “nonessential.”
I used to think rest had to be earned.
That confidence should come from outcomes, not maintenance.
And that “self-care” was just a trendy word for people with too much time.
Then I realized how wrong that was.

Today in 3 minutes or less:
✔️ The Small Thing That Shifted Everything
✔️ The Lie of “Deserving” Self-Care
✔️ How to Build Confidence Through Maintenance

💫 The Small Thing That Shifted Everything
I used to get a haircut twice a year.
Seriously. Two times.
I’d let it grow, shrug it off, tell myself, “I’m too busy right now, it’s just hair.”
But every time I looked in the mirror, I didn’t really see myself.
I saw someone who always put himself last.
Then one day, I just booked a haircut.
And then another one.
And another.
Now I go every 3–4 weeks.
I walk out feeling sharp. Fresh. Aligned.
Because when I look like someone who’s showing up intentionally, I act like someone who’s showing up intentionally.

💭 The Lie of “Deserving” Self-Care
Somewhere along the way, we picked up this belief that prioritizing ourselves has to come after everything else is done.
But the truth? It’s the other way around.
When you take care of yourself, your work improves.
Your creativity expands.
You're less reactive. More patient with your team.
You can’t pour from an empty cup, and you definitely can’t lead from an unconfident place.
So if something as small as a haircut, a workout, or a solo walk helps you feel like you again, it’s not optional.
It’s part of the job.

💪 How to Build Confidence Through Maintenance
Here’s what’s been working for me:
1. Schedule your confidence rituals.
Don’t wait to “find time.” Book the haircut. Set the gym reminder. Protect it like a client meeting.
2. Stack identity with action.
Want to feel sharp? Do the things sharp people do.
You’ll catch up emotionally once you start acting the part.
3. Track how you feel after.
It’s wild how consistent the data is: every small act of self-respect creates momentum.
4. Eliminate guilt language.
Stop saying, “I shouldn’t.” Start saying, “This helps me show up better.”
5. Advocate for your people, too.
Tell your team, your spouse, your friends: “Go take care of yourself.”
The more we normalize that, the more confident communities we build.

Your Move This Week:
Book one thing that’s just for you this week.
Notice how different you feel when you do.
Then, go advocate for someone else to do the same.
Because confidence doesn’t start with massive wins.
It starts with small acts of self-respect.
So yeah, go get the haircut.
And walk out feeling fresh 😁
