The REAL thief of joy...

The REAL thief of joy…

Have you ever had something good happen and still found yourself disappointed?
Not because it was bad.
Because it wasn't what you expected.
Maybe the project worked, but not as well as you hoped.
Maybe the vacation was great, but not the version you pictured.
Maybe the business grew, but slower than someone else's.
It's funny how quickly our minds do this. We take a perfectly good experience and compare it against something slightly better.
And that’s when the joy meter goes down…

Today in 4 minutes or less:
✔️ The Upgrade We Never Got
✔️ It's Not the Comparison
✔️ The Flight Incident
✔️ You Get to Choose the Measuring Stick

🫤 The Upgrade We Never Got
Recently, our family had a flight planned for months.
About twelve hours before departure, we got the text every traveler hates:
Flight canceled.
The airline moved us to a different flight and a different plane.
I'll admit it.
I've become a bit of a flight snob.
I know the difference between airlines and aircraft.
I know exactly what experience we booked.
Part of me was frustrated because it felt like a downgrade.
Not because the new flight was bad.
Because I knew what we were missing.
The better seats, the extra comfort, the little details that make a long trip easier.
And for a while, that's all I could see.

🪞 It's Not the Comparison
Somewhere over the Pacific, something clicked.
We always hear that comparison is the thief of joy.
But I think the real issue is what we're comparing against.
Comparison is just a mental tool.
When you measure your current reality against a slight upgrade, you will always feel cheated.
When you measure it against your actual baseline, you find immediate clarity.

✈️ The Flight Incident
As I watched the kids during the flight, I found myself thinking about another trip.
The first time we flew with Kingston was when he was about eighteen months old.
That flight was chaotic.
The kind of chaos that makes you question every future travel decision.
By the end of it, we practically made a family rule:
Never fly with an eighteen-month-old again.
Yet here we were.
Another eighteen-month-old.
Another long flight, Lily was incredible, the boys were fantastic.
The entire experience was smoother than we could have imagined.
Nothing about the circumstances changed.
The flight was still downgraded, the seats were still different, the expectations were still disrupted.
The only thing that changed was my reference point and suddenly the trip felt completely different.

📏 You Get to Choose the Measuring Stick
A lot of happiness comes down to what you're measuring against:
If you compare today's business to someone else's highlight reel, you'll feel behind.
If you compare today's business to where you started, you'll probably feel grateful.
If you compare your current challenge to the ideal outcome, you'll feel frustrated.
If you compare it to a season you've already survived, you'll probably feel stronger.
The circumstances are identical.
The meaning changes.

The next time you feel frustrated, disappointed, or stuck, try changing the comparison.
Instead of asking:
"Why isn't this better?"
Ask:
"Better than what?"
Then choose a different reference point.
Compare yourself to where you were a year ago
Compare the current challenge to one you've already overcome
Look for evidence of progress instead of evidence of perfection
Notice what you've gained instead of only what you missed
Because gratitude doesn't always come from changing your circumstances.
Sometimes it comes from changing what you're comparing them to.
